The Simulation of Joy

A MEMENTO VITAE // Balloons In The Sky

It begins in the pre-dawn chill of the New Mexico desert. The drive from the hotel and the walk to the launch field is quiet. The balloons lay flat, blobs of color on the dark ground. Then, the silence breaks; the rhythmic roar of propane burners fills the darkness, a violent beauty breathing life into thousands of yards of silk. We watched the fire fill the air from a hudred balloons, mesmerized by the scale of it all, waiting for the signal to climb into the basket and join the hundreds of balloons already straining for the sky.

Balloons In The Sky is the final resolution of The Simulation Trilogy. The journey of this trilogy has been one of gradual elevation and structural discovery. It began with the foundational Painting With Fire, moved through the skeletal desert landscapes of Marfa, Texas—where the second act, Bones In The Sky, premiered at Art Blocks Weekend—and now culminates here in Lisbon with Balloons In The Sky. While previous chapters explored the entropy of our digital existence, this act is born from color, weightlessness, and the pursuit of a collective memory.

The Collaborative Eye

To build this system, we didn't just observe; we immersed ourselves in the mass ascension. We watched at ground level as hundreds of balloons expanded like colorful lungs against the morning sky, then joined them in a twelve-person basket. Drifting with the wind as five hundred balloons rose in waves around us, we captured the sky from the inside out.

The “ground truth” of this simulation is a dual perspective: Jennifer Ionson captured the vastness and precision of the event through 3,000 digital SLR photographs, while Bård Ionson documented the textured, chemical memory of the morning through 700 frames of 35mm half-frame film. By weaving together digital clarity and analog grain, we created a custom generative AI that understands both the physics of flight and the emotion of the light.

The Human Signature

The machine now exists in a state of perpetual mass ascension, dreaming an infinite stream of balloons projected onto a towering 75-inch portrait screen. It is a window into a latent space that never truly existed, yet remains tethered to that original New Mexico morning.

A machine can draw a thousand balloons but cannot see the wind. It takes a human eye to know when the light is right.

Your button press is not an automation; it is a signature.
You are the curator of this moment.

Standing before this installation at the NFC Summit, a physical Red Button stands between the machine's infinite dream and your intuition. When you press it, you freeze the fluid AI stream at the exact moment your eye recognizes beauty, claiming a 1/1 artifact that is immediately minted, printed, and transferred to your digital wallet.

Drawing on the Fluxus tradition that art is choosing, the button becomes the pilot's burner: a tool to navigate the algorithmic winds. By freezing the stream, the viewer transforms ephemeral code into a permanent object — a declaration that even within a simulation, the human capacity to assign meaning remains the ultimate reality.

In an era of digital abundance, this is a reminder of the power of presence. To collect, you must be here.

SECTION_04

The Mechanics of the Node

Balloons In The Skyis engineered as a self-contained, autonomous art-delivery system—a “living” node designed for archival permanence.

TECHNICAL_PIPELINE

THE_INTELLIGENCE

A custom StyleGAN architecture navigating a multi-dimensional map of 3,700 original digital and analog source images.

THE_INTERACTION

An industrial-grade physical interface designed for immediate tactile response.

DUAL_MANIFESTATION

Upon capture, the node simultaneously executes a 1/1 NFT mint on a decentralized ledger and a high-fidelity print via an integrated Citizen CZ-01 dye-sublimation printer.

STEWARDSHIP_MODEL

The installation is a complete, self-sustaining entity—a “Gallery in a Box.” Each node consists of a custom SFF GPU workstation, a high-brightness 75-inch portrait display, and the proprietary AI model.

Designed for auction as a self-contained node, the owner becomes a steward of the simulation. This role includes not only the physical hardware but also a perpetual share of all future minting revenue generated by the machine's interactions. It is a piece of art that functions as its own economy, sustaining the memory of the flight as long as the machine is powered on.

The Stewardship Opportunity

EDITION_STRUCTURE

COLLECTOR EDITION

Node 1

Collector Edition

Currently accepting inquiries for institutional stewardship.

THE_COLLECTOR_PATH

The intended model for Balloons In The Sky is a philanthropic acquisition and museum donation or a collector who will put it on public display. The collector purchases the installation, donates it to a museum, and the NFT deed transfers with it.

TAX BENEFIT

The collector receives a deduction on the appraised value of the donation.

OPPERATIONAL FUND

The institution receives 45% of every future mint to fund maintenance, shipping, and educational outreach.

LEGACY

The artwork funds its own future. The collector gives once; the institution benefits indefinitely.

Institutional Model: Autonomous Stewardship

Balloons In The Sky utilizes a self-replenishing operational fund integrated directly into the smart contract. Unlike legacy media art, this work generates its own perpetual revenue through visitor interaction. These funds are designed to autonomously cover the work's lifecycle: from technical maintenance and logistics/shipping for traveling exhibitions to the funding of related educational programming.

NODE_CONTENTS

The complete, self-contained collector node acquired at auction:

  • Custom SFF GPU Workstation
  • 75" High-Brightness Portrait Display
  • Physical Red Button Interface
  • Citizen CZ-01 Dye-Sublimation Printer
  • Bård Ionson's Proprietary AI Model + Generative Code
  • Master Smart Contract

OWNERSHIP_KEY

Control of the installation is governed by a master smart contract on Ethereum mainnet. At auction, a unique NFT deed transfers to the collector — granting on-chain ownership of the installation and all its future activity.

The key is the work.

PROTOCOL_INNOVATIONS // FULL-STACK_ARTWORK

Autonomous Model Architecture

Unlike projects that rely on centralized servers or generalized models, Balloons In The Skyis an autonomous, self-contained generative entity. It is a “Full-Stack” artwork where the provenance, the intelligence, and the economy are inextricably linked on-chain.

STATUS: ARCHIVAL_GRADE

PROPRIETARY PROVENANCE

Trained exclusively on a custom dataset of 3,700 images (35mm analog film + Digital SLR) captured by the artists. No third-party data or pre-trained prompt engines.

ON-CHAIN PERMANENCE

The .pkl model weights and generative source code are stored on Arweave, cryptographically attached to the NFT deed metadata for infinite archival recovery.

ECONOMIC AGENCY

The installation contains its own integrated financial protocol, managing operational revenue, venue splits, and maintenance funds autonomously.

STEWARDSHIP_CONTROLS

The deed grants the owner active controls over the simulation:

Speed of change
Abstraction meter
Display orientation

PHASE_01 // THE_PREMIERE

10%Gallery Fee
15%Sustaining Pool
75%Artist’s Share

During the Lisbon premiere, revenue is optimized to favor the creator’s equity and the initial seeding of the operational fund.

PHASE_02 // LONG-TERM_STEWARDSHIP

10%Active Venue Fee*
45%Artist Royalty
45%Stewardship Fund

*The 10% Venue Fee is routed to the current gallery that sponsored the work. The Steward maintains governance over this fee and may elect to retain 5% to account for direct operational management (the "Stewardship Rebate").

The Steward's 45% share functions as the artwork's autonomous endowment, ensuring the memory of the flight is maintained, shipped, and exhibited indefinitely.

INITIAL MAINTENANCE POOL

A portion of revenue 15% from sales generated during the premiere at NFC Summit transfer to the new owner in the installation wallet at the moment of acquisition to be used for mainaining, shipping and exhibiting the work.
